Fostering/Breeding Home or adopting a "Ludwig's Doodles" puppy

This module was modified from the original version is on www.adai.org with permission I express my specific program breeding Goldendoodles and Purebred Standard Poodles.  We have at least one puppy going into their Prison Program.

Ludwig's Doodles Foster Family program will be an integral part of expanding on our existing breeding program by reaching out to the community by educating them on raising a healthy, well rounded, good citizen, great companion puppy/dog.   Setting out the roadmap with support materials, scheduled meeting times and chat forums offering support for our dogs..

The life of a service or therapy dog from Ludwig's Doodles breeding program (under my personal umbrella) begins in our home or in a home of one our  Veterinarian approved).   Our volunteer fosters are highly dedicated persons and families who welcome dogs-in-training into their homes. They help us by training one of our dogs house manners, basic obedience and public socialization. The average time commitment is nine months to a year, however the time is dictated by the age of the dog. We place all dogs when they are approximately two years of age, so they are maintained in the foster home environment until the dogs are approximately 20 to 22 months old. The minimum foster time commitment is three to four months. The dog moves to final advanced training at our Education and Training facility for three months of additional training after he completes the foster program.

Are you thinking about becoming a foster parent? Please consider the following questions before making this decision:

  • Do you have the ability to set up a routine and follow it?
  • Do you enjoy the companionship of puppies/dogs?
  • Are you willing to take the dog out on regular public outings?
  • Are you willing to socialize your puppy with other dogs?
  • Do you have a desire to enrich lives of many people?
  • Do you have a safe area to provide your puppy?
  • Does everyone in your household want to participate in this project?
  • Are you able to follow the Ludwig's Doodles training curriculum? Based on consistent, positive reinforcement, corrections with timing.
  • Are you ready to open your heart and your home to a Ludwig's Doodle?

Qualifications of a Foster Parent

Foster Family Fundamentals

Our foster families provide the strong foundation necessary to build in their dogs the understanding of service dog skills. In addition to the teaching of these skills, foster families provide basic obedience, house manners and public socialization with other animals and people. Their responsibilities include:

  • Spending at least 15-30 minutes a day in structured training with your dog.
  • Taking your dog out to public places at least 3 times per week.
  • Meeting monthly with an Ludwig's Doodles trainer through foster classes or private training sessions.
  • Keeping a weekly/daily journal of your dog’s progress in training.
  • Training your dog in accordance with Ludwig's Doodles techniques and philosophies.
  • Providing transportation to the vet, as needed.
  • Providing a safe, non-smoking, clean, loving environment for your dog, as chemical free as possible.

Financial Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all expenses related to owning the puppy if you are in the breeding program, foster home or just adopting a puppy.  You will need to buy:

  • 6ft. nylon leash and flat collar with ID tag.
  • Metal dog bowls (2)
  • Gentle leader
  • 40lb. bag of dog food Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy Formula (chicken)
  • Ear cleaner
  • Teeth cleaner
  • Wire Crate
  • Foster Family Manual / Training info
  • Training Log book

Training Classes

Part of your responsibilities as a foster parent is attending a monthly foster class it will be at the family farm of the Ludwig's in Zephyr ON. These classes provide the information our puppy owners parents need to complete the training goals for their dog. We have four different classes: Puppy, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. A class is chosen for each dog depending on their age and training skill level. Each dog progresses from level to level depending on when the goals from their particular class are completed. During each class an evaluation is done to give fosters goals of what needs improvement and what is going well.

Training Tips

Lesson 101:  Only allow your puppy to have habits now that you will be happy for him to have as an adult.  Training starts from day 1 and continues for their entire lives.

Order of importance as per our Vet:  Exercise, Discipline and then Love in that order.  Your love is shown when you are exercising your dog.
